The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) reports
cigarette smoking in the United States causes
serious illnesses in an estimated 8.6 million
persons, and about 440,000 deaths annually.
Smoking-related health care costs run $75.5
billion every year, and the price tag for lost
productivity is an additional $92 billion a
year, for a total of more than $167 billion.
